Julia Forrest

27/01/2023

Psifida Art Gallery, Paphos.

Julia Forrest is a Brooklyn based artist. She works strictly in film and prints in a darkroom she built within her apartment. Her own art has always been her top priority in life and in this digital world, she will continue to work with old processing. Anything can simply be done in photoshop, she prefers to take the camera, a tool of showing reality, and experiment with what she can do in front of the lens. Julia is currently working as a teaching artist at the Brooklyn Museum, Abrons Art Center, and USDAN Center. As an instructor, she thinks it is important to understand that a person can constantly stretch and push the boundaries of their ideas with whatever medium of art s/he chooses. Her goal is for her audience to not only enjoy learning about photography, but to see the world in an entirely new way and continue to develop a future interest in the arts.

Nina Vurdelja
performance researcher and cultural worker

Nina Vurdelja is a performance researcher and cultural worker active across disciplines and geographies, based in Finland. Her interests reside around more-than-human sensuous encounters and ecologies of being together. She is a Phd Candidate at Doctoral school for Communication, Media and Performing Arts at Tampere University, dwelling in meeting spaces between culture, art, and philosophy. She has been involved in cultural and artistic projects with environmental focus in Serbia, Belgium, Finland, Iceland, Estonia, etc.

For her residency at Kimonos/UNIDEE, Nina is having a closer look at transcorporelity of water in context of global sea rise. In an intermedia approach lifting off the hybrid, sensing body, she is observing entanglements between glacial melt and transformations in more-than-human coastal habitats of Mediterranean.

Ekaterina Shcherbakova

- to cover;

- to impregnate

Rally Space, Paphos

December 2023

The solo exhibition of Ekaterina Shcherbakova, artist in residence at Kimonos Art Center, - to cover; - to impregnate explores the phenomenon of name changing.

This metamorphic practice is used in different cultures throughout history. One would change their name in order to cheat their fate: recover from illness, escape the curse or simply reborn metaphorically and live a better life. In Cyprus, where name changing is reduced to a plain bureaucratic gesture, this practice acquires an augmented dimension. The title of the exhibition comes from the etymology of the verb “to name”. The word play unfolds in a series of sculptures and pictorial works made with the use of ashes and blood. All of them are fruits coming from the body or through the body, being a result of revelation or concealment.

Artist Talk: Adonis Volanakis

The House of Arts and Letters of Pafos in collaboration with the Kimonos Art Center invites you to the presentation of the visual artist Adonis Volanakis. On Saturday, January 13, at 18:30, at the Pafos Municipal Art Gallery.

Adonis Volanakis presents his artistic practice by unfolding his research methodology with examples of artworks from his two-decade international journey. Volanakis combines social sculpture with anthropological approaches, drawing with archaeological findings, oral history with photography, and cooking with performance to create live art installations that negotiate the human condition and experience. His artistic practice seeks alliances in encounters with the unknown person - blind dates - and in active listening and empathy with female narratives - herstories.

The talk will be in Greek.

The event is part of the program “The Cypriot Aphrodite” funded by the Department of Modern and Contemporary Culture of the Deputy Ministry of Culture.

Organized by: The house of Arts and Letters-Pafos, Kimonos Art Center.

Supporters: Pafo’s Municipality, Petrideion Foundation.

Curation: Yiannis Sakellis
